Basil Hetzel Institute
This project comprises a new $18M research facility to accommodate world leading research groups based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide's western suburbs.
Whilst housing many different research bodies, the design needed to provide a sense of community and encourage the sharing of ideas for the various researchers and provide a positive environment for research activities to flourish.
The design placed particular emphasis on reducing energy consumption through innovative passive design and low energy engineering systems. The building incorporates laboratories, research meeting and office accommodation as well as public education spaces and has bought researchers into one place and given this world recognised centre of research excellence its own identity.
