A 30-bed state-of-the art facility for the treatment of older persons with acute mental illness. Carefully positioned on an extremely challenging sloping site at the Flinders Medical Centre, the unit accommodates both inpatient and outpatient services in a stunning environment on a single level with no steps or ramps. The unit has been carefully designed as a safe and non-institutional environment to provide patients with personal space and a sense of wellbeing. Seamlessly incorporating dementia and passive safety design principles, the centre provides spaces filled with natural light, garden outlooks and views of the Adelaide plains. The facility planning supports excellent observation and is easily understood and navigated by patients. Therapy-led treatment is supported by a wide range of internal and external therapy spaces including walking trails and patient gardening areas. Engineering services are accessed via a roof space walkway system to minimise disruption to patient areas.
