RGH Older Persons Mental Health Unit
Representing a new generation of facilities for the treatment of aged people with mental illnesses the success of this multi-award winning project was founded on challenging the accepted design parameters for such buildings and promoting the notion that a positive, nurturing environment is a key factor in patient treatment and recovery.
The design integrates the building interior with landscaped external spaces and places a high emphasis upon the privacy and dignity of occupants, the special needs of the aged, and the safety and wellbeing of all occupants. Incorporating extensive passive design and sustainable building system initiatives the facility has demonstrated outstanding environmental benefits including very low energy use.
The project has been widely referenced nationally as a benchmark facility for future mental health facilities and the incorporation of sustainable principles in smaller health buildings.
